Tamura Ryuichi /

“The Mercury Sank in the Mouth of the Dying Day”

A deer at bay will fall from the cliff,

but for a human being to fall,

there has to be a poem.

The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day,

when I was visiting the cheap apartment

in the East Village in New York.

Downstairs was a printer and a law office.

The poet’s room was on the second floor,

with just a typewriter and scattered sheets of music.

Of course, there’s nothing novel about a poet’s workroom.

In a painter or sculptor’s atelier,

there is a faint scent of

the secrets of creation and destruction of form.

What we had here was strong coffee, a dry martini, and a pack of Lucky

Strike.

I couldn’t quite keep up with poet’s English,

so I just looked at the wall. A portrait of E.M.Forster

and a watercolor of an Austrian mountain villa:

enough to bring this poet’s secret to light.

The “individual” who acknowledged himself heir to Victorian culture,

Austrian forests,

and New York backstreets.

Japan, I was there in 1938. It was just for an hour at Haneda.

We went right to wartime China,

   Isherwood and I.

The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day,

when I was in “In Time of War”.

The poet’s great hand shook mine in farewell.
