Ishigaki Rin /

A Lemon and a Mouse

I can’t find one of the Sunkist lemons

I bought yesterday.

A mouse apparently carried it away.

Thinking that just about now that peewee in a velvety black coat

is clasping the shining yellow fruit to is chest,

its beady bright eyes moving restlessly,

I feel the loft space of my humble house a palace.

My straitened circumstances

sweep along steadily like a cold autumnal wind

from the front door to the kitchen.

Under the badly leaking roof

a heavy rain falls

and that pitiable boarder,

friendless for so long,

has stolen a beautiful thing.

Oh, I wish I, too, could hold something larger than life.

Tonight overhead

in a dark dusty place

I saw

a light like a star shining brightly.
