Jeffrey Angles – Ⅳ
On Translation
Going into the bedroom
I find another me already there
That me is not blond
That me has black hair
I ask him why he is there
He simply tells me to get in
That he has been waiting for me
Since the moment he was born
We use different languages
But we communicate somehow
I take off my clothes, lie down
And tell him about my childhood
About when I dropped the ice cream and cried
About when I lost my shoes in the blizzard and got blamed
About when I had the pillow fight with grandfather
I remember, says that me
But when he speaks of his memories
They sound like the memories of someone else
The bed I remember becomes a futon
The lakes I remember become seas
Sandals become zori
Lunch boxes become bento
Our conversations slip by one another
Never really meeting in between
The two of me let out a sigh
And the room returns to silence
Fidgeting beneath the sheets
I take the hand of that me and
Stare at the ceiling for some time
And eventually, we embrace
Caressing like two strangers
In the hopes of turning into
One person, complete
