Translator’s note: In this amusing and satirical poem, Arai playfully takes many
of the issues filling the Japanese press in the year after the March 11, 2011 disasters—the ongoing nuclear crisis at Fukushima, the horrors of the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami, the downturn in the Japanese economy, the concern about the low national birth-rate, and even the lack of individuality of Japanese youth—and synthesizes them into a brilliant, organic whole. The original Japanese is full of associations based on sound. In order to replicate (or at least make a nod to) that word play, I have left the original Japanese in places and modified ordinary English spellings in others, for example, spelling the words “unbelievable” and “incredible” with a bo at the end to highlight the similarity in sound to the many Japanese words that Arai uses that also end in bo.
