Yuka Tsukagoshi-II
Inverted Day
Sunset reflected on a rice field–
that’s about all I remember of that day.
In my head
uninvited friends are making a racket
while again, I try to remember the days ahead
that I’ve never seen.
Looking at me, you– born while I was blinking my eyes–
cheerfully crow.
Wishing to die might be the flip side of wishing to live.
Like how morning is the other side of night.
An answer that is never returned.
On the orange surface of the rice field
a burnt question, blinking.
Your rage suddenly explodes.
And I, sitting still like mud, watch it spark.
In that moment, my friends lower their voices.
Wishing to die is the flip side of wishing to live.
I blink
I blink and you were born.
Not yet realizing that you yourself were alive.
Like how your mother’s breast
bounces off your pressed fingers
the wind goes on pushing at my back.
The sky stuck in the field looks like carbonated water.
The voices bounce back
and burn my cheeks.
(Inverted Day)
