The Door
(For 8-year old Sybren, on the death of his mother Yvette. Written 11 August 1999,
the day of a total solar eclipse)
You said she’d found the golden key
Of the door to the other world…
Such wisdom for a boy so young
Such purity of head and heart!
Not searching for the how and why
You trusted what she’d said to you
Her promise that she’d forever wait
For you to follow her there one day
Such bond between mother and son
Survives the parting and remains
A source of strength that feeds itself
And makes you bear what you have lost
She was a woman of few words
But the tracks she left were deep
As of an animal that knows the way
To where it nests and sleeps:
The place that inspires all our deeds
And makes them meaningful
She left the earth but where she’s now
You know she loves you still.
