The Self-Portrait

Red and vermillion are the colors of your soul.

They are colors like the destiny

that other colors can’t replace.

You at seventeen

directly after seeing a Munch show in Kamakura

began to paint self-portraits

slapping red and vermillion

on forehead and cheeks, like keloid.

There was none of the ample black hair I’d remembered

or the pupils that darted as quickly as a rabbit.

Only the hair cut short

and the two eyes devoid of pupils turned smoky grayish blue

were attached to the cheeks burnt molten.

You never revealed the flames inside you.

You refused visitors worried about you,

you refused morphine,

and, staring at all the pain head on,

you accepted death without flinching.

But, death, you will not understand

the ferocity of the passion she managed to hide to the end.

Red and vermillion are the colors of your soul.

No one can yield them for different colors.

After the flames changed you into ashes and a few embers

and countless years and months passed

I saw your self-portrait for the first time,

the only thing you left for this world.

Since then, when I fall asleep, I wonder:

If there truly are colors in dreams

what can I use for compensation

for sleep to dye me red and versmillion?
