Man

 —A Hypothesis Concerning Whiskey

You’re still

so young.

I think you’d better not drink whiskey.

The English novelist Colin Wilson

came up with a hypothesis.

For the horse to become the horse, it took thirteen million years.

For the shark to become the shark, it took one hundred fifty million years.

For man to become man,

it took only thirteen thousand years:

besides which,

it was a far more violent change,

in these past ten thousand years,

from a clever chimpanzee to Rodin’s “The Thinker”.

How did it happen,

this change in the human condition, this so-called evolution?

It was when man invented the fermentation of alcohol

in 8000 B.C.

that this change occurred, according to Mr. Wilson’s hypothesis.

You’re still so young,

I think you’d better not drink whiskey. To this day,

a horse has never killed a horse.

A shark has never killed a shark.

Why do humans

kill other humans?

Why do humans

love other humans?
