Jim Beam Memories
One night in the Midwest, the U. S. A.
I had a talk with Sam about translating my poem,
“A Study of Kyofu”.
Sam first translated kyofu
as horror.
I held fast to fear.
The two of us,
over cheap JIM BEAM bourbon,
discussed the meanings and nuances
of horror and fear.
Of course, neither Sam’s Japanese
nor my English were up to arguing
about horror or fear.
JIM BEAM just had to serve as interpreter for both of us.
Those words horror and fear
have now become a memory of some country town with a big oak tree.
Seven years have passed since then,
but once in a blue moon when I drink bourbon
some nuance of fear comes back to me.
Now I
page through a dictionary at random,
and plenty of synonyms turn up:
dread fright alarm dismay terror panic….
Force acts on others horizontally.
That force has brought science and its systems into being,
turned war and peace to dead languages.
That horizontal-moving force
turns human words into dead languages.
The beautiful dead languages,
once abstracted from the words,
become signs.
If this process intrinsically contains fear,
words crystallize,
become transparent,
so human five senses cannot reach them. Signs give birth to signs.
And by this multiplying method
I am no longer “I”.
As a result
horror reveals itself.
The effect of horror reveals itself.
The cult minutely calculating the effect of horror reveals itself.
When force acts on my self vertically
I wake from my dream
or enter
a new dream,
the world of imaginative fear.
Who’s the guy walking outside the window?
Is that Sam translating kyofu into horror
or I as I was seven years ago, persisting in fear?
I haven’t drunk
JIM BEAM for a long time.
dread fright alarm dismay terror panic…..
