The Piece of Mail, Or My Nightmare 

 

 

If I break the seal something terrible will happen

But I cannot throw it away

So the envelope sits, seal unbroken

On my desk for weeks

 

The envelope with seal unbroken

Gradually grows bigger and bigger

The message grows more complicated

The terrible lurking news grows worse and worse

Calling for emergency measures

 

I know who sent it

That’s why I don’t want to read it

If I read it something terrible will happen

But I cannot throw it away

I cannot toss it into the fire

If I do, it might explode

 

What shall I do?  What shall I do?

 

The sealed envelope

Swollen as a stomach ready to give birth

Squirms upon the desktop

 

 

 

 

 

 

郵便物あるいは悪夢

 

封を切ると大変なことになる

だが捨てるわけにはいかない

封を切らないまま封書は

何十日も机の上に置きっぱなし

 

封を切らないまま

封書はだんだんふくれあがる

メッセージはますます複雑

悪いことにますます重大

緊急の対応が必要になる

 

発信者が誰だかわかっている

わかっているから読みたくない

読めば大変なことになる

といって捨てるわけにもいかない

燃やすわけにもいかない

火をつけると爆発するかもしれない

 

どうしよう　どうしよう

ふくれあがった封書は

もう臨月のような腹をして

机の上でのたうっている
