Ayukawa Nobuo / 鮎川信夫 – I

The Fallen

Through the mist, for example,

or from the sound of footsteps on all the stairs

the executor slowly looms.

– This is the beginning of it all.

The distant yesterday …

perched on stools in a gloomy bar

not knowing what to do with our faces twisted with pain

we would place the envelope face down.

“Really, not a trace?”

– For us who should have died, that was certainly the case.

M! My friend! Yesterday’s cold blue sky

still dwells on my razor blade, you see.

But I can no longer recall

when and how I lost sight of you.

Our golden age was cut short–

we played — changing typefaces, playing gods –

“That was an old prescription for us,” I mumble…

It was always autumn, yesterday and today

“Dry leaves fall amid loneliness”

the voice has been traveling down the path of black lead

toward the shadows of people, and toward towns.

On the day of your burial, no words were offered

there were no attendees

no indignation, no pity, no feeble seat for complaint.

You raised your eyes to the sky,

simply stuck your feet into your heavy boots, and lay down silently.

“Goodbye. Neither the sun nor the ocean deserves my trust.”

M, my friend, you rest underground in peace.

Does the wound in your chest still ache?
