Korakuen Amusement Park
I stood by myself, little in a long line
at the amusement park, watchful
among the backs of strangers.
I could feel, unmistakably,
a caring gaze directed at me alone,
felt it as I set me feet
on the floorboard of the machine
and listened to the operator’s cautionings,
though I didn’t wave.
Spinning fast, faster,
nearly flung from the whirl,
in that gleaming machine
splashing the setting sun’s rays,
my eyelids shut tight on an image
of my father.
Light from the stars that might no longer exist
rained down that night.
Back at Korakuen Station
Father bought an evening paper,
again his distant self.
後楽園
遊園地の長い列に
幼いわたしはひとりで並んでいました。
知らない人の背中をみなりながら
たしかに
感じていたのです。
列の中の
わたしだけを見つめる視線を。
マシーンに足をかけ
係員の注意をきいている時にさえ
感じていたのです。
手を
振りはしなかったけれど。
渦の外へ
放りだされそうに回転を速めて
わたしは夕日を
光るマシーンで跳ね飛ばしていました。
つむった眼に
父をはめこんで。
もう存在していないかもしれない星の光が
届いていた夕べです。
後楽園の駅で
父は夕刊を買いました。
いつもの遠い父にもどって。
