Jane Hirshfield – Ⅰ

White Curtain in Sunlight and Wind

More and more

wanting to learn

how to leave things be.

To live as the old Dutch painters

looked at a fish:

all of it eaten but leaving no sign.

Or if so much cannot be given,

then to enter as Chuang-tzu’s butcher

entered an ox–slipping completely through;

each cut, sinew and fat, sharpening

the knife. Nothing taken, or left behind.

Heart returned to the granite mountains of its home.

After, it could almost walk away.
