International Date Line

                 For Mutsuo Takahashi

 

 

 

As I cross the international date line

I dive from the past of yesterday

Into the future of tomorrow

Like a child sinks into the pool

First feet passing through the quiet surface

Ankles, calves, then thighs

Waves of pleasure passing through

As I am enveloped by the cold

Muscles reflexively tighten

And for a moment, I cannot move

But as my head sinks and I open my eyes

There spreads before me eternal blue

 

Looking from that side

I seem to disappear

But looking from this side

I am born anew

Which is correct?

The closer the plane comes

To its destination

The more the me of yesterday

Sinks beneath the ripples

I do not belong anywhere

Neither to the past, nor the future

–And perhaps, just perhaps

Not to the present either

日付変更線を超えると

きのうという過去から

あしたという未来に飛び込む

子供がプールに沈むように

まず足が静かな表面を通して

足首とふくらはぎ　そして腿

冷たさに抱き込まれる

快楽の波が全身に伝わると

無意識に筋肉が張って一瞬

動けなくなる　しかし

頭が沈んで瞼を開けば

永遠の水色が広がる

あちらから見ると

わたしが消えていくけれど

こちらから見ると

新しく生まれてくる

どちらが正しいのか

飛行機が目的地に

近づけば近づけるほど

きのうのわたしは

さざなみ漣の下に沈んでいく

わたしはどこにも属していない

過去にも　未来にも

ひょっとしたら　現在にも
