Yuka Tsukagoshi- III

 Fragment

In the night that lies heavy on the far sea surface,

I’ve seen a fragment of an afternoon.

It looks like a pointed lotus flower

blurred in the humidity.

(Oh wait, I haven’t actually seen it)

Its red and stone-rough touch doesn’t fit into my palm.

“I’ve found a fragment of afternoon.”

Not realizing that my skin is melting

I swim (downward)

in the bird’s eye. Night.

It is my lips

that are being swallowed.

Innocent crawl. A bell.

It’s ring floats in the air.

(It’s always morning that we drift to)

through the water

as I turn my head to breathe

a vague sorrow appears

like rung out clothes.

The foam that has enveloped my body disappears

and my mind gives a loud laugh.

(I no longer remember that afternoon)

Like a spider web, the surface of the ocean gets into my eyes.

To me, sky and sea are the same.

But I want to put a line between them.

My toes stiffen.

If I lose this

I’m sure I’ll cry.

(stanza break, poem continues)

The darkness lies toward some bright direction.

The contour of the dried petal-like afternoon

becomes white and sodden,

wavering as if it were entangled with my shadow in the blue depths.

When we catch eyes and exchange words

our intimacy has disappeared so easily

like the trailing off of an echo.

破片 (Fragment)
